Helix DNA is both commercial-source and open-source (from The Philosophy behind Helix Community)
The Helix Community was built based on the promise of open-source and the inherent efficiency and effectiveness of the open-source paradigm. However, we are also mindful of the legitimate concerns of commercial businesses who are wary of the open-source license requirements. To allay their concerns, we chose to create both a commercial-source and open-source community. Since the Helix DNA platform has separate licenses for both communities, an optimum level of synergy can be attained while keeping the platform itself common and available for both communities.

As an open source project their product can only improve through the active participation and collaboration of numerous individuals from all over the world. There are many ways to get involved and they encourage every user to do so! Below are some jumping off points to get you plugged in and active in the project.
- - Developers: learn how to build the player from scratch, read documentation, contribute a bug fix, implement a new feature or port the player to a new OS.
- - Testers: run through our test plans, submit bugs.
- - Translators: translate the player into a new language.
Conclusion
Real Player and its other version is "free for life" generally, however, Real player FOR LINUX is an open source. It is not fair judging a distribution and simply saying "YOU HAVE REAL PLAYER (generally), WHICH IS NOT OPEN SOURCE".
